The development includes a new commercial lobby with 5 storey atrium and 4 retail levels including a new façade to Pitt Street Mall.

The office tower is expressed as two volumes: a silvery polished concrete volume to the north housing the core and breakout areas, and a transparent green glass volume to the south housing a 19m clear span office space.

The challenge was to insert a large scale mixed-use building incorporating retail and commercial space seamlessly into the fabric of a city.  We have created a highly contemporary addition to the city that respects its historic neighbours and provides an active public mid-block link.


The retail podium is an uncompromisingly modern insertion into the streetscape with a facade that reinterprets the cornices and vertical masonry proportioning of the adjoining heritage buildings in a contemporary language. 

A genuinely public mid-block link creates a direct connection between Pitt and George Streets.  The office lobby and entries to the mid-block link are expressed as urban rooms, defined by sandstone blade walls, which provide a transition to the scale of the city. 

A 5 Green Star Design Rating has been achieved.

The research aims to prompt an intensive engagement with the temporary, sensorial and social qualities of space and a fresh consideration of architecture.

The relevance of studying the relationship between film, art and architecture is pursued as a specific source of inspiration and tool in the process of architectural design work.

In addition, the investigation aims to explore how the link between architectural space and film space might inform the expanded conception and practice of architecture. A consideration of film as an art form relying on temporary architectural environments might aid one in thinking through the experience of narrative in the city.

The Arch -exhibit blog is part of ongoing research and has been funded by the NSW Architects Registration Board through the Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship awarded to Amanda Clarke in 2010.


Amanda is an Architect who works in the Bates Smart Sydney studio. She has 10 years combined professional experience working in Architecture and Art Direction/Design for the Australian Film Industry. Amanda is a Master of Architecture and Bachelor Arts in Architecture graduate of UTS. She also has a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Sydney University.
